Hitchcock employs The Birds to build suspense by slowing down. Hitchcock establishes Brenner and Daniels relationships long before any events occur. A strange real-life attack by smokey shearwaters in Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed by some to occur due to diatom poisoning in the digest of anchovies by the birds, causing extreme aggression, was studied by Hitchcock in preparation for his film.
